Technical Officer New Entrants Programme (Track)
Course Description
This programme is for inexperienced technical staff (less than 1 year). The programme covers 3 separate modules
Module 1: This covers the introduction to the technical officer role and what is expected, the systems which would be used to store the data gathered through the various inspections, the importance of data management/filing. In addition an awareness of CRT/JCT, gauging and rail wear.
Module 2: Track surveying, delegates are introduced and shown how to use an automatic level for design work associated with on track machines, with this they are shown how to correctly book the data so it can be used to create lift information, the 3rd part of the process is to use the data and turn it into lifts via the collimation method of reducing levels.
Delegates are then introduced and shown how to use a theodolite for use of setting a design straight, also associated with on track machines. A very hands on practical module in both training and live railway environment.
Module 3: This looks at manual geometry recording, the importance of highlighting issues/defects for rectification in a timely manner before a significant problem occurs, this includes management of the data, who it's issued to and what systems this feeds into.
Second part of this module covers gauging, again the importance of why the inspections are carried out, the pitfalls of poorly managed clearances, this includes management of the data, who it's issued to and what systems this feeds into.

Undertake 053 Inspections
Course Description
This course is a two-part event. Delegates must enrol in the computer-based pre-reading on Oracle first, called 'Undertake 053 Inspections Prequalifier'. This will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and can be downloaded if required. Once they have done this, they can then enrol in the 'Undertake 053 Inspections' face-to-face training event. These are designed to develop delegates who are responsible for Undertaking 053 Inspections as part of their duties on Network Rail Infrastructure. This requires that the inspections and subsequent actions detailed in the standard NR/L2/TRK/053 Issue 8 are undertaken correctly and by competent persons.
Audience
Suited to persons required to prove their capability in the area of ensuring that all facing switches are managed correctly to eliminate the known derailment risks. It would be desirable for delegates to have completed the Track Patrolling Training. However, this is not essential, as all delegates attending the course will be required to have completed the course pre-read.

Undertake Initial ESR Designs
Course Description
This course is designed for people who design Emergency Speed Restrictions. During the 3 days of training, delegates will complete numerous designs from a variety of scenarios.
It has been introduced as a result of a Signal Passed at Danger (SPaD) incident at Wootton Bassett Junction on 7th March 2015.
Following this incident, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) made a number of recommendations in their report (08/2016). A key recommendation was that emergency and temporary speed restrictions are designed and implemented in a way which results in clear and correct information being provided to train drivers.
Audience
Anyone undertaking ESR designs in accordance with NR/L3/TRK/7006 Creation and application of initial ESR design. The most likely audience are TME/ATME/SM[T] and Section Supervisor[T] role holders.
